Amazon.com Review
Tortilla, chapati, naan, pita, focaccia, roti, lavash, lefse--all these and about a dozen other flatbreads can be baked neatly in this ingenious countertop appliance while their fillings are either cooking or warming in the appliance's skillet. Not only does the 1,440-watt appliance make flatbreads easy to prepare, a detailed, color-photo, 122-page booklet comes along to provide recipes for both breads and fillings, opening an entire ethnic-cooking universe to novice and expert cooks alike. For ultimate ease, frozen doughs (pizza, crescent rolls, biscuits, cornbread, breadsticks, etc.) can also be used. The appliance works this way: The lower portion is a nonstick bread press. Preheat the press, place a ball of dough on the removable nonstick paddle, and flatten the dough into a 9-inch round by lowering and locking the press handle. The flatbread then cooks and slides easily off the paddle afterward. Atop the appliance is a built-in, 9-inch, nonstick skillet with a glass lid that can be used to further brown cooked flatbreads, to keep them warm, or to cook or warm fillings. The skillet works like any electric skillet and has three temperature settings: warm; medium for baking thick breads like focaccia; and high for sautéing, stir-frying, and pan-frying foods. For storage, the press handle comes out and fits into a rear slot. --Fred Brack

Summary: Pretty cool machine 2008-03-14
Comment: We used this all time time for making tortillas. We just bought the frozen dough balls in the grocery store. We used to laugh so hard at the sound of them cooking in this machine. It sounded like high pitched farts. The kids enjoyed the sound. I enjoyed the tortillas....ok, we all enjoyed the tortillas. Took literally seconds to make. Sold it a few yrs later at a garage sale (spring cleaning and decluttering) and it sold for more than I paid on Amazon. Can't beat that!!

Summary: Not hot enough to cook authentic tortillas - too rubbery 2003-11-18
Comment: My wife cooks the traditional Mexican food she grew up with at least 5 times a week. We purchased this machine so that she could make tortillas quickly. Unfortunately, the unit does not get hot enough to cook the tortillas properly. The resulting flat bread is rubbery and lacks the proper consistency. By following some of the additional recipes, we made bread suitable for roll-ups or desert wrappings, but it was *impossible* to reproduce traditional tortillas cooked on a hot gridle. If you are attempting to make a real Mexican tortilla, this is not a substitute for a cast iron gridle.

Summary: Tortillas~ Waalaaa! 2003-08-28
Comment: I absolutely LOVE this Hamilton Beach product! I have had it for about 3 months now and make tortillas in it every week. My family loves mexican food! This product comes with a cookbook along with great instructions. The kids even love to join in and help press the tortillas. Another great feature on it is the top part, we use it to saute our fajita meats and onions, or we have even used it to keep the tortillas warm. We live in the country far from town so its press our own tortillas as we need them. Enjoy!

Summary: Beats the old way... 2003-08-14
Comment: After a little getting used to this new unit, I found out that this is an excellent tortilla and crepe maker. In about 35 seconds you can have a fresh made flour tortilla ready to go, speaking of which it' time to heat up the unit and make fresh rollups for lunch, really!
